Free Pre-Algebra Tests and Generator
My sons need help with math. In order to check their skills in pre-algebra, I keep looking for free online tests. Many of these suck. Many have bad problems. I wondered if I could do better... with AI. So I asked Claude to help me create a comprehensive assessment for pre-algebra, breaking things down into sections. Each section has a couple of example problems (one easier, one more difficult), and then there are five questions of increasing complexity.
What's cool is that Claude actually created a Python script that can generate new tests for you, in seconds. You can also have it focus in on specific problem areas, so if your child struggles with fractions, you could just created several pages of fraction problems to work through. Of course, you'll need to help your child or student learn, but my initial impression with the problems I've looked at are that they're reasonably well formulated — and you get an answer sheet as well.
Rather than keep this to myself, I thought I'd share the end results. You can download the Zip file, extract it to a folder, and then to run the generation script you'll need Python. On Windows 11, this is simple. Open PowerShell (Start → type "PowerShell" → press Enter). Then in PowerShell, type:
pip install python-docx matplotlib
Once that finishes running, type:
python make_prealgebra_test.py
Boom, you have a new Word document with a comprehensive pre-algebra test. Do you only want certain portions, or more maybe multiple problem sheets? Both are supported:
python make_prealgebra_test.py --sections 6,7 --sets 3
There are additional instructions viewable in the Python file. Have at it!
If you don't realize this already, I am a complete computer nerd. I've been playing around with computers since I was about six, back in the late 70s. AI can be good or bad, but people still need to know basic math skills, and this will help you check your knowledge in pre-algebra. Have other questions?
